Further Afield

If you like exploring and do not mind driving there are endless opportunities for visits outside the area.  To the west both Dartmoor and Exmoor are on the doorstep being approximately an hour car drive from Charmouth.  Also to the west is the city of Exeter with its magnificent Cathedral and large modern shopping centre.

To the east is Weymouth and Portland that will be the official 2012 sailing venue for the Olympics.  The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) will be hosting it.

Weymouth is situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the river Wey.  It has a large sandy, shallow beach that is very safe for bathing.

Condor Ferries run from Weymouth to the Channel Islands so you can spend a day in Jersey or Guernsey.

Visit Brewers Quay with its paved courtyards and cobbled streets packed with shops and attractions.

Lodmoor Country Park located east of Weymouth and just a 15-minute walk is perfect for a day out.  Attractions include, the Weymouth Sea Life Park and Marine Sanctuary, miniature railway and mini golf as well as an RSPB nature reserve.

Famous for its stone, the island of Portland is linked by road to the mainland.  Places of interest include Portland Bill, Pulpit Rock and Lighthouse and Portland Castle, one of the best-preserved coastal forts.
